Young Artist Opens Art Gallery in Historic Downtown Tunica

We all know the true spelling of Mississippi: “M, I, crooked letter, crooked letter I, crooked letter, crooked letter I….” But now these words have another meaning as downtown Tunica welcomes the Crooked Letter Art Gallery. Recent University of Mississippi graduate Heather McGregor has high hopes for the downtown area and local artists alike as she embarks on this new venture that she has pursued at only 24 years old.

McGregor graduated from the University of Mississippi in May of 2014 with two degrees, double majoring in Print Journalism as well as Art with an emphasis in Graphic Design. While finishing her degree, McGregor helped re-open and work her family’s local restaurant, the Café Marie located in the historic Hotel Marie in downtown Tunica. It was here that McGregor became familiar with local artists while also sharing her own creations with café patrons. Speaking with local artists, working on her art projects and being inspired by her delta surroundings, McGregor’s business sense started to kick in. Soon she realized that something was lacking in the area: a place for local artists to showcase their work to the community.

“I looked around Tunica and while we do have the Arts Council and lot of creative people, we did not have anywhere for these people to get together and show their work to the community and visitors alike,” stated McGregor. “Being in an area with such a rich history, such a rich culture, we need a place where people can see and share the inspirations that an area like the Mississippi Delta brings you.”

It seems that people have agreed as Crooked Letter Art Gallery has already welcomed 11 local Mississippi artists.  Booths include a wide range of creations including jewelry, furniture, art, canvases, charcoal as well as framing- something for every creative person around!

In addition to hosting artists’ booths, Crooked Letter will also offer classes and parties in the back studio with about 5 events already on the books for holiday months! Looking to the future, McGregor plans to offer her photography skills by creating a photography studio in the back of the gallery along with a small outside court yard behind the shop.

With something offered for every interest, Crooked Letter Art Gallery is a must stop for locals and visitors when in the area. To stay informed of changes and a complete list of upcoming events, be sure to check out Crooked Letter Art Gallery Facebook page.
