Memphis Add-ons to Your Tunica Vacation

As many of you know, we’re working to open the new Tunica Gateway to the Blues Visitor Center and Museum.  We expect the Visitor Center to open in the fall and the museum to be soon after.  If you’re like me and can’t stand the wait, I wanted to tell you about a couple Music Lover’s add-ons to your Tunica vacation that are just up the road in Memphis.  Plus, if you’re traveling along the Mississippi Blues Trail, there’s a marker in Memphis!

Memphis Rock N Soul Museum

Back in the Spring, I had some family and friends visit, so I of course, took them around to the local Tunica must-sees like the casinos, Hollywood Café, Tunica RiverPark, Downtown Tunica, etc.  Then we headed to Memphis for a day.  The highlight of our day was the Memphis Rock N Soul Museum.  My group ranged in age from 13 to 80 and we all loved it!

Some of us reminisced about the old days, while others learned about the beginnings of the music scene in Memphis.  When you first walk in you watch a quick video and then have headphones for an audio tour.  The best was that there were stations that you typed in a code and could listen to songs from Memphis music royalty.  I liked it so much that I went right out & bought an Al Green album!  It was pure Love & Happiness!  For more information about the Rock n Soul Museum, click here.

Gibson Guitar Beale Street Showcase

More recently, a friend visited the area for the first time.  I knew he was really into guitars, so we headed to the Gibson Guitar Beale Street Showcase.  I honestly had no idea what the tour would entail, but was really surprised to find out you actually walk through the factory and learn how Gibson Guitars are made!

It was so interesting, even for me – who loves music, but doesn’t have a clue about guitars.  My friend was thoroughly impressed and soaked up all the knowledge he could and was even eying a guitar in the gift shop.  On the website, they tell you to reserve your spot and I didn’t really understand why, but when we got there I soon realized how quickly the tours filled up.  Also, just a tidbit, when you are in the factory they have humidifiers throughout the building to keep the wood from drying out, which means you won’t be drying out either!  Be prepared to sweat and be on the warm side, so dress appropriately.  For more information about the Gibson Guitar Showcase, click here.
