You only play as well as you look. I don’t know about you but if I look and feel my best, my game tends to follow that same path. If you want the upper hand on the course it can’t hurt to have the latest in gear and apparel to get you started, and here are some things to consider:
1. Pick the Right Weight
With most upscale golf courses still requiring golfers to wear pants on the course, it is often a struggle to stay cool on an extremely hot summer day. Don’t worry — you can still wear pants, and golf shirts for that matter, that can control your comfort level. With new fabric technology and many outdoor retailers entering the golf apparel market, more lightweight, wickable fabrics (cotton CoolMax) are finding their way into golf pants, shirts and even socks and hats. Several retailers offer shirts with mesh ventilation and pants with mesh pockets and waistbands. If you can “keep your cool” on the course, you are more likely to beat and outlast the competition.
2. Shoes, Shoes, Shoes (think: Location, Location, Location)
There is a lot of walking involved in the golf game, and there is nothing worse than walking or even riding in a golf cart for four hours (or longer depending on your skill) with sore, achy feet. You definitely need to find the shoe that fits you right. It not only affects your swing, but it can also affect the stability of your short game. So much of your putting success relies on your ability to keep your feet comfortably planted. Be sure that your choice of golf shoe supports the type of arch in your feet. You can get sizing and measurements taken care of at any golf Pro Shop. It never hurts to ask for expert help. This way the golf shoes can give you the maximum comfort as you walk and more importantly, as you play.
3. Follow Your Likes and Dislikes
Just because Tiger or Phil may wear a mock turtleneck does not mean you have to! I am also not a fan of Hawaiian prints, “shagadelic” patterns, disco-ball designs, pink and green awning stripes, but apparently John Daly is. My point is you don’t have to take advice from the pros when it comes to clothing choices. Wear what makes sense to you. You simply cannot play your best game if you are worried about looking silly or spilling Gatorade on your Loud Mouth pants. Remember: comfort — physically and psychologically — is key.
Keep these tips in mind, and you will not only be comfortable, but you also may likely end up at the top of the leader board.
