Who doesn’t love a new adventure? Imagine standing aboard a boat as it idles in open water. You’re probably picturing a rod and reel in your hand, right? Instead, you raise your bow and arrow, pointing it toward a massive fish that happens to be swimming close to the surface. With the precision and intensity… Read more »

Every year, as Thanksgiving Day approaches, I begin to savor the thought of loads of food. However, my dreams of turkey and pecan pies are quickly disturbed by visions of my nieces and nephews running through the house screaming, my father’s suggestions that he worked harder for a living “back in the day,” my sister’s emotional outbursts about not being mom’s favorite, and my grandma’s incessant requests for me to sing her favorite song, “Islands in the Stream” (I am no Kenny Rogers).
It’s November in the Mississippi Delta! It seems that each month has its own theme, October – Breast Cancer Awareness, November – Thanksgiving, December – Christmas. But for those who live, work and play in the Mississippi Delta, November is a time of dramatic change. We lose an hour of day light as we set our clocks back an hour and the lush green fields of summer return to their natural state as the farmers end their harvest and prepare the land for next years new beginning.
On a hot streak at the casino and need to cool off? We have put together a list of our casino hotel pools. Book your room and find your own private oasis at one of our casino resort pools.
This has to be my favorite time of the year. I look forward to the sun shining and warmer temperatures after a long winter. When Spring arrives I can not wait to get outside, take a stroll and explore. The great thing about being in Tunica is that I don’t have to go far to take a Spring stroll and if strolling is not your thing we even have a bike trail. Here are a couple of my favorite places to visit –
It’s finally spring and for those of us in the Delta that means it’s planting season! Cotton is definitely one of the most picturesque of the crops in the Delta, so it’s no wonder that visitors love it!
Dust off your bikes and air up your tires it’s Springtime in the Delta. Tunica has two bicycle trails to get you outside and enjoying this weather. The first of the 2 trails is a 35 mile trail that begins at Walls in DeSoto County and follows Old U.S. 61 — the Great River Road Scenic Byway — passing through Lake Cormorant in DeSoto’s west to the Tunica County Line. Stopovers include the future Bass Landing Park, DeSoto County’s only Mississippi River access. The second trail is a 13 mile loop that begins in historic downtown Tunica and leads you through the Delta to Mhoon Landing on the Mississippi River and back to town.
Each Spring we pull out the lawn chairs and stock the coolers for the Alive After Five concert series in downtown Tunica. The concerts are the last Friday of the month in May and June and are held in Rivergate park. Scheduled to perform this year is Nancy Apple and the WDB and Delta Heart. Here is a clip from last years concert where the Memphis Snake Doctors performed. For more information on the Alive After Five series contact Tunica Main Street at 662-363-6611.
Delta Country Jam returns to Tunica for it’s 2nd year on Memorial Day Weekend and discounted tickets are available at the Gateway to the Blues Visitor Center! Spend the holiday with partying with Keith Urban, Dierks Bentley, Florida Georgia Line and many more! Stop by and pick-up your tickets today!
“Top of the Delta”… “Gateway to the Blues”… “South’s Casino Capital”… all of these represent Tunica accurately but for one weekend in April every year, we can add another descriptor: Home to the annual Rivergate Festival!
Summer travels can be made all the better by taking an RV and touring the festivals in one area. There are all sorts of delicious local foods, music and activities for those of all ages at Mississippi festivals and you won’t want to miss a thing. Plan a week’s stay or stay and visit different festivals from August through October! Whichever you choose, you are sure to have the time of your life!
Tunica is well-known for its festival fun, and the Tunica Balloon Bash is just one of a number of celebrations in the region. It runs from 9 August through the 11th at Tunica Resorts. The 2nd Annual Tunica Balloon Bash is colorful, fascinating and provides chances to see balloon races that can’t be beat. Park your RV at Sam’s Town RV Park where you will have full hookups, a lovely landscape and shuttle buses to the casinos if you are so inclined.
Country music is coming to the Mississippi Delta, October 4-5, 2013 for one of the largest and most anticipated country music festivals of the year, Delta Country Jam Music Festival. The festivities will be located on the Abbay & Leatherman Plantation behind Hollywood Casino & Hotel.
Mark you’re calendars for Saturday, April 13 from 12noon-6pm for the Crawfish and Corvettes Festival at Fitz casino Tunica.
There will be crawfish, hot dogs, hamburgers, and nachos to munch on while browsing corvettes, new and old. Face painters and balloon artists will be on hand for the kids along with arts, crafts & apparel vendors for the adults.
Join us at the Tunica RiverPark on March 30th from 11-1 for a hippity hoppity good time at the 4th Annual Easter Egg Hunt on the River.
The egg hunt begins at 11 followed by games with prizes and an appearance by the Easter Bunny. Photographs with Mr. E Bunny will also be available. Parents we haven’t forgotten about you. There will be drawings for museum passes and prizes from the museum gift shop. This is a free event for the whole family.
The Fitz Casino goes all out each year for St. Patrick’s Day. And who better to hold Tunica’s biggest St. Patrick’s Day party than the casino that celebrates the luck of the Irish all year long?
Fat Tuesday is tomorrow, and one of the best ways to celebrate is by paying homage to the food and culture that New Orleans and the Gulf Coast has made popular across the U.S. In Tunica, Gulf Coast seafood like shrimp, oysters and crab can be found all around, and we all know Tunica is the perfect place for an extended celebration.
Northeasterners, Midwesterners, Northwesterners and those of you spread out across other unreasonably wintery regions: it’s time to make your annual migratory escape to warmth. Take off your snowshoes and come down South to Tunica and enjoy our gaming, restaurants and entertainment. You may think our accents are a little funny, but our warm hospitality will make you forget all your snow shoveling responsibilities.
Whether you are wanting a low-key romantic evening with that someone special or looking to live it up with live music and balloon drops, this New Year’s Eve Tunica has something for everyone.
The air’s going to be hot in Tunica this November! Come see the 1st Annual Tunica Balloon Bash that will welcome 40 hot air balloons to four casino resort properties. Hot air balloonists from across the country will come together the weekend of November 9-11, 2012 to compete in early morning races to win over $12,000 in cash and prizes.
And this event isn’t just for the hot air balloon expert! Each casino property will host balloons in their parking lot for a balloon glow at sunset on Friday and Saturday nights. Visitors are invited to meet the pilots and experience the size and beauty of this majestic sight of the orange glow in the Mississippi Delta.
In addition to the balloon glow, visitors will have an opportunity to ride 40-50 feet up in a hot air balloon on a tethered ride. One balloon at each property will be tethered or attached to the ground for these rides at no cost. Make sure to get there early because the tethered rides only last for 2 hours and we expect a long line.
And if you do visit during the festivities, we want to see your photos of the event or your view from up above Tunica. Show us your view by sharing your photos on Twitter and Instagram with the tag #TunicaBalloonBash or post them on Facebook.com/TunicaMS.
Fall is upon us in the Delta. Temperatures are beginning to drop and leaves are starting to turn, and there’s no better way to mark the season than with the Delta Day Festival in Downtown Tunica’s Rivergate Park on October 27.
The fun begins at 9 a.m. and doesn’t stop until 5 p.m. for this one-day festival celebrating the heritage and history of The Delta. Free and open to the public, Delta Day offers something for everyone in the family.
The Tunica Convention & Visitors Bureau has been informed that many of our hotel and casino properties have had inquiries regarding Hurricane Isaac’s effect on our area. Please note that the Tunica hospitality and tourism industry located in North Mississippi approximately 350 miles from the Gulf Coast will not be effected by Hurricane Isaac. We anticipate business as usual here in North Mississippi as we continue to prepare for the Labor Day weekend.
Sometimes it can drive a person crazy when a holiday falls in the middle of the week, but not this time. This 4th of July lands on a Wednesday giving you something to do all week in Tunica. This year is flying by and May is almost here. The month of May to me means Mother’s Day, A chance to thank mom for all she has done over the years. One of the best ways to thank her is
to get her something special, and that’s not hard to do with all the shopping options in Tunica. From the outlet mall, specialty boutiques, Paula Deen gift shop, and even one of a kind gifts at the Gateway to the Blues visitor center gift shop you are sure to find something mom will love.
Spring has sprung and my pink clipboard has been resurrected from last year. It’s said when the clipboards come out around the Tunica Chamber of Commerce office that it’s planning time for the Rivergate Festival. Can you believe 20 years have passed since the best little party in downtown Tunica started? We’ve got tons of fun and great entertainment coming. OK I’ll tell you what’s on the clipboard so far…
Can you believe that it is almost time to start making plans to ring in 2012? Whether you like to ring in the New Year with a quiet dinner or rock out with a group of friends, Tunica has something for you!
Here is a listing of our New Year’s Eve events. Keep checking back. We will be updating the list as more events become available –
While several of you are downloading store maps and planning out your routes through crowds of anxious Black Friday holiday shoppers, it’s great to keep in mind that Downtown Tunica offers a variety of specialty shops and one-of-a-kind gifts for everyone including the hottest fashions of the season – no escape route needed! Forget the lines and holiday chaos. Shopping in Downtown Tunica is about as peaceful as it gets.
The holidays are fast approaching, and you know what means – holiday parties. And there’s no better place to host your holiday gathering than in Tunica! Whether you are thinking an intimate dinner party or a blowout bash, Tunica has a variety of venues that can be transformed into your perfect winter wonderland.
When someone mentions the Delta, what comes to mind? Probably The Blues, the Mississippi River, agriculture, casinos, and, of course, cotton! If you’ve visited Tunica, you can see that we rose from acres of farm land to become the great gaming destination we are today. You may have glanced at the fields of cotton on your way to one of our nine casinos and maybe even stopped to grab a little. Being that we’re not originally from the Delta area, Lisa and I wanted to learn more about cotton and experience a cotton picker for ourselves.
The 2011 Smoking Aces Festival & BBQ Championship is taking place this weekend, September 16-17, hosted by Harrah’s Casino. The festival, which we talked about before and which benefits Porter-Leath, is billed as a celebration of some of the most important things in any man’s life: meats, motors, matches, music, malts and margaritas. Taken individually, any of those elements would make for a good weekend, but combine them and you are talking about one heck of a party. The Smoking Aces Festival will be a good time benefitting a good cause, but it’s not a fall weekend without a little healthy competition. We aren’t talking football here, we’re talking cornhole – the “matches” on the list of important m-words showcased by this event.
August – the dog days of summer, it’s hot, dry, humid – hotter, dryer and just down right sticky here in the Mississippi Delta. To top it off, summer is over and if you have children, it’s back to school time. But August brings promise, the promise of the first weekend in September. Yes, on the first weekend of September each year, it’s the time most wives love to hate – SEC Football and the opening day of dove season. And, that’s just the start, leading strait into a full season of the NFL complete with days of your significant other out communing with nature as it can only be found on a deer stand or in a duck blind!
Malts & Margaritas at the Double Down Beer-Rita Fest, where for $35 per day you can get unlimited samples of 101 beers and margaritas!
Meats ~ For only $7, you can taste test & help choose the People’s Choice BBQ winner as teams compete for prizes and entry into the 2012 Memphis in May Barbecue Championship.
Motors ~ The Koss Motorsports Full House Auto Car Show featuring over 125 classes for all years, makes and models of automobiles. This show is sure to make any Motorhead’s head spin!
Matches ~ Watch or compete in the American Cornhole Organization’s Texas Hole’em Cornhole Classic!
Whether you like to eat, drink, dance or play, there’s something for everyone! Continue reading for more details on all the upcoming fun…
It was just another day on the Mighty Mississippi. Barges traveling up & down to their unknown destinations, while the alligator gar peaked at the water’s break and the deer ran along the edge of the river. Our group nervously walked down the boat ramp approaching the dock. Only one of us had ever experienced an airboat ride until now.
The Down the Road blog has a special guest post today from Michael Johnson, Director of Tennis at Tunica National Golf & Tennis. Coach Michael is here to tell us how to practice our serves while beating the heat on the four clay courses at Tunica National:
Today officially starts the dog days of summer. With the longs day and hot temps in store for the next few months, make plans to cool off at Harrah’s Heatwave pool parties.
Recently, I was looking for something to do one Saturday afternoon. I was bored out of my mind and couldn’t stand lying around the house anymore, so I decided to take a drive to downtown Tunica. Tunica Main Street has always been a nice place to meet up with friends and family for the Alive After 5 concerts, but I never really spend much time there unless I’m headed to Crawfish Alley at the Rivergate Festival or to the Levee Shack inside the Tunica Pharmacy to pick up a gift for my mother. This time I decided to stop by and pick up a map of Tunica Main Street and a visitor’s guide, which you can find by clicking here.
The signs of spring were abundant this past weekend in Tunica. The weather was gorgeous! While walking the dog, I came across blooming irises and tulips, a baby turtle and a cardinal. All these things reminded me that it’s the time for renewal and probably a little spring-cleaning. Typically, I associate spring-cleaning with dusting the blinds, washing the windows and rearranging the furniture, but this year, I’m all about working on cleaning out my closets.
Matt Jordan a regular contributor to this blog proclaimed earlier this week that he knows spring is here each year with the start of March Madness. For me, Spring has not officially Sprung in Tunica until what I affectionately call “Crawfish” week or officially know as the annual Tunica Downtown Event – called the Rivergate Festival.
In Tunica, we LOVE the color green! Especially when the cashier’s handing us our winnings! And when you’re looking to win, you’ve got to have a lucky charm.
Feeling lucky? Well then, change your “Irish I was in Tunica” t-shirt and head on over for St. Patrick’s Day at Tunica Roadhouse Casino & Hotel. Roadhouse welcomes Frankie Hollie & The Noise performing at the stage bar with drink specials including $1 draft green beer, $3 Irish Coffee, $3 Shamrock Shaker, $5 Irish Car Bombs, $3 Guinness & $1.50 domestic bottles. The green will be abundant (even if it’s just from the free t-shirts & beads!)
And thanks to Tunica Roadhouse’s Leprechaun, we’ve got a pot full of buffet & fine dining comps to give away!! Tell us what your Tunica Lucky Charm is and be entered to win! ENTER NOW!
As a previous guest and visitor to our area John Phillips once wrote, “Every duck hunter in the nation believes that if they’ve lived good, sportsmen-like lives and have close relationship with God, they’ll hopefully get permission to hunt at Beaver Dam near Tunica, Mississippi, before they die.
We thought we cleaned out the Tunica Comp Closet to get ready for the New Year, but we didn’t do enough cleaning! We are doing early spring cleaning all month and giving YOU comps!
Every year countless people make New Year’s resolutions. They pledge to work out more, to eat healthier foods, to be more adventurous, to save more and to spend less money. Most of these resolutions won’t make it past April 1, hence why it’s called “April Fool’s Day.” With this in mind, here at Tunica, we have come up with some anti-resolution solutions to help you start off your new year in a state of guilt-free bliss!
Our wish is that your sleigh is full of joy and happiness during this holiday season! The entire TunicaMS team thanks you for your valued support of our destination. Our spirits are bright as we have joined forces with the team at the Tunica RiverPark and the development of the Gateway to the Blues Visitor Center Museum is well underway.
Be sure to keep following TunicaMS on Facebook and Twitter along with checking back here for the most up to date information on what’s happening in your favorite good times and gaming destination. Until then….
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and we look forward to seeing everyone “Live it up just down the road” in 2011!
Mmmm. Do you smell that? The smell of a Turkey baking in the oven, bread rising, and pies cooling on the counter. These are the scents of Thanksgiving, one of my favorite times of the year. Now that I have your tastebuds’ attention, I thought I would share a couple of my favorite recipes to make during the holiday season.
Do you need a reason to get away? How about a $19.99 room rate at a casino hotel? Would you like a comped buffet? Do you know how to get a discount code at a non-casino hotel to save you 50%? Would you like to know the featured promotions at every casino in Tunica in one place? We’d like all of the above, too! That’s why we created a new Promotions Page on TunicaTravel.com.
Travel Tunica has taken you to the golf greens this year, but this week we wanted to explore “golf with a shotgun” at the Willows Sporting Clays & Hunting Center at Harrah’s Casino.
When the stresses of the week have gotten to you, sometimes you wish you could just escape. Usually your desire never becomes reality because most people don’t have time in the middle of the week to take a vacation and still be back in time for work in the morning. I decided I would try out the increasingly popular theory that Tunica is close enough to Memphis to take a work week getaway, but I will admit, I was skeptical.
Ever wondered exactly where the Mississippi River goes? Most people know that it empties into the Gulf of Mexico, but have you ever stopped to think about where the Mississippi River has been before it reaches us?
Festivals will fill the air soon on October 16th in Tunica and will be a guarantee for fun and food with Delta Day in Downtown Tunica and Romp on the River at the Tunica RiverPark.
With Labor Day Weekend just around the corner and a fall getaway on the radar, you might be wondering what to do during your time off of the casino floor in Tunica. While you can always go outlet and antique shopping, play a few rounds of golf or tennis, treat yourself to the spa, lay out by the pool, and enjoy live entertainment, here are some ideas of things to do exploring the area that are off the beaten path.
One of the most frequent questions we hear when people call our office is, “Do you know of any current discounts or specials in Tunica?” Of course, another one is, “Can you give us some coupons for our upcoming trip to Tunica?”
Now there’s good news for both questions! Our new Promotions and Specials Page has both, plus MUCH more, and as a Tunica Insider, you are the first to see the page that has it all!
It’s party time in Tunica! The @TunicaMS Twitter account is one year old today!
It all started with the first tweet “Check out the latest promotions and specials on our website www.tunicatravel.com”. Little did we know that one year later and over 2,700 tweets later, we would be addicted. We have tweeted about everything from where to get the best catfish in the Delta and having to endure spa treatments to the experience of big name entertainment in Tunica, all so our followers can know what to expect when visiting.

You normally see him on the tennis courts in Tunica, but last week Donny Flowers, Director of Tennis at Tunica National, competed in the 2010 Table Tennis US Open in Michigan.
“It was an awesome experience,” Flowers said. “Just to qualify to be able to compete with people from around the world was an honor and to have the opportunity to play a game I love makes it even more enjoyable.”
Happy Fourth of July! Today is Independence Day and is the National Day of the United States. It’s that time of year again when we break out the fireworks and enjoy the parades, barbeques, concerts and baseball games with our family and friends.
Nothing says 4th of July better than fireworks. Spending the 4th of July weekend in Tunica this year will get you in the patriotic spirit, but it’s not the 4th of July without seeing the beauty of red, white, and blue in the sky. If you plan on staying in the Tunica/Memphis area, book your room now. Here are the largest scheduled displays and entertainment to let freedom ring!
Summer is here! It gets hot in Tunica, but when Harrah’s throws a Heatwave Pool Party things get even hotter!
Chrissy, Claire, and I headed to cool off at the pool party recently. We decided if we were going, we were going big, which included renting a cabana for the day. The cabanas have a personal refrigerator, towels, chairs and even a misting system for cooling down. Someone was always stopping by to ask if we needed anything. We did have a few cabana boys, but unfortunately none were shirtless!
Tunica might be the South’s Casino Capital, but with its location in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, Tunica promises to be more than just a place for gaming. Steeped in the rich cultural history of the Delta, Tunica offers antebellum bed and breakfasts, local dining favorites, the Tunica County Museum and the new Tunica Riverpark.
Ahh…Father’s Day! One of the best day’s of any man’s life is the day he becomes a Father! It’s only then that he can truly begin to understand the years of conversations, scoldings, disappointing looks, praise and pride that his own father has shown him over the years. Being a Father is a tricky thing 364 days a year. It’s Daddy this, Daddy that, Why Daddy, Can I Daddy, Money Daddy, Daddy Please and then, the one day that a Father can call his own, that 365th day – Father’s Day.
If it is the springtime in the South you usually can find an outdoor festival every weekend, if not everyday — Tunica’s Crawfish Boil, Memphis’ Beale Street Music Fest and New Orleans Jazz Fest, just to name a few. BUT, no festival this time of year can compare to Memphis’ World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest.
Ahhh….Spring has sprung here in the Mississippi Delta. This week in Tunica is aptly called “Crawfish Week” by my family and myself. The annual Rivergate Festival is being held this Thursday, Friday and Saturday in downtown Tunica, with over 15,000 pounds of mudbugs ready for the taking! “Suck the heads and eat the tails”….that’s what my seven-year-old daughter says!
Want to win some cash, free play, and prizes to make your upcoming trip to Tunica even better? You could win hotel comped nights, spa treatments, golf rounds, museum admissions, dining comps, free play, and CASH! What’s the catch? There isn’t one! We just want you to win before you even get to Tunica. Grand prize winners will be drawn April 12th, and weekly winners will receive High Roller Kits.
