A Hot Air Balloon History Lesson

On November 9-11, Tunica will host the first-ever Tunica Balloon Bash. We’re very excited to add tethered rides, balloon glows and a pilot competition to our visitors’ gaming experience that weekend. But all the talk about hot air ballooning has also made us wonder how they got their start.

Watch Sinbad’s Visit to The Funny Bone on Tunica TV

If you need a few laughs to brighten up your day, check out Sinbad’s recent visit to Tunica on Tunica TV. The comedian was at The Funny Bone Comedy Club at Harrah’s Tunica in May, and we were left in tears from laughing so hard.
The Funny Bone at Harrah’s is Tunica’s only comedy club. It’s not uncommon for headliners like Sinbad to visit The Funny Bone. Jim Carrey and Steve Harvey are past performers, and former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Tim Meadows will perform at the club September 14-16. There are performances at The Funny Bone most Tuesday through Sunday nights, so check The Funny Bone website for a complete schedule of upcoming performances.
If you missed out on Sinbad’s performance, watch a clip of his routine and interview with Tunica TV. We especially appreciated that he took some time to recall the early days of Tunica.

Olympic Spirit Lives on in Tunica – Tunica TV

Yesterday’s Closing Ceremony signified the end of this year’s Summer Olympics. You could wait four more years to experience the pageantry, drama and excitement of sport’s greatest showcase, or you could head on over to TunicaTravel.tv  for an Olympics extravaganza that is totally Tunica.

Tunica’s Entertainment Never Cools Off

Summer may be winding down, but that doesn’t mean Tunica’s entertainment is cooling off!  Everyone else may be going back to school, but it’s time for you to start making plans to go back to Tunica!  For a complete list of upcoming entertainment, click here.

Casino Spotlight: Bar Hopping at Harrah’s

As I mentioned in my last post, Harrah’s Tunica doesn’t have a shortage of options. And one place I like to have variety is in where I can unwind with a cold drink. While taking a break from blackjack or the dance floor, Harrah’s can supply you with your favorite cocktail. Here are few of my favorite spots to grab a drink at Harrah’s:

Tunica National Tennis Events in Full Swing!

If you play tennis or just prefer hitting the ball back and forth, getting into tennis at Tunica National can be just what you need to stay in shape.

The most important reason for playing tennis at Tunica National is it is indoors on air-conditioned clay courts.  That means no sun in your eyes when serving, no sweltering heat, and low impact on your joints from the clay surface, so even if you are out of the swing of things, you will hurt less the next day.

Tunica is Bursting with Fun the Week of July 4th

Plus, if you’re like me you can use vacation to make it an extra long weekend before or after! That’s a Jackpot in my books! Here’s a list of the week’s activities:

Sinbad Tickles Tunica’s Funny Bone

If you ever hear me say my job is all work and no play, then make sure to smack me upside the head!  I thought this past weekend would be work, but it was all play thanks to the Funny Bone Comedy Club!

Tunica Rivergate Festival Celebrates 20th Year

Spring has sprung and my pink clipboard has been resurrected from last year.  It’s said when the clipboards come out around the Tunica Chamber of  Commerce office that it’s planning time for the Rivergate Festival.  Can you believe 20 years have passed since the best little party in downtown Tunica started? We’ve got tons of fun and great entertainment coming. OK I’ll tell you what’s on the clipboard so far…

Casino Spotlight: Relax Like a Star

With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season over and the indecisive weather driving me nuts, a little earlier this month I decided to take a mini vacation away from it all for the night. I couldn’t decide where I wanted to go, but I knew I needed a little rest and relaxation, a little fun and maybe a little special treatment would also be nice. I decided I would venture over to Hollywood Casino. It’s a short drive from Memphis, so I figured, why not?

Go All In at the Tunica Aquatic Center

Go all in while in Tunica and not just at the Blackjack table. The G.W Henderson Aquatic Center is Mississippi’s largest natatorium. This means that even when it’s freezing outside you can still swim like it’s summertime.

Casino Spotlight: Good Eats at Hollywood Casino

In our last Hollywood Casino spotlight we promised to bring you the scoop on awesome food at Hollywood Casino. Let’s dig in!

Well, what can I say? I like to eat, and on my latest trip to Tunica, Hollywood Casino’s Fairbanks Steakhouse seriously hit the spot.  My biggest shock occurred when I traveled upstairs from the casino floor and stepped in the entrance. I felt like I had completely left the casino and gone somewhere entirely different. If it had not been for the windows that overlooked the casino floor, I might have had to go back downstairs just to make sure I wasn’t in a different dimension. I was immediately greeted by the House manager, Rex Lafayette, who was beyond professional and accommodating. My servers Bryan Fernandes and Mamadou Bah, where some of the most impressive gentlemen anyone would ever want to meet. Their service was impeccable.

Memphis Add-ons to Your Winter Tunica Vacation

As a Memphian who frequents Tunica, I know a thing or two about great places to visit in Memphis while on your way to Tunica. Check out my list of top 5 stops on your way to Tunica.

Gold Strike Casino Resort Tunica Finds a New Fan

A few weeks ago, I decided to take a Thursday and Friday off. I needed a serious break from my demanding workload and couldn’t think of a better place to escape than Tunica! I packed a weekend bag and jumped in the car for that familiar half an hour drive. Each time I go, I stay at a different hotel. Each one is like its own separate island. The casinos are different. The atmosphere is different. The rooms are different, and the food is different, too. This time I chose to stay at the Gold Strike Casino Resort for the first time. I guess I wanted to see how lucky I could be in a place whose name suggests that fortune is found within. Plus, I had heard some pretty awesome things about the hotel rooms and restaurants.

Horsing Around at the Tunica Arena

Fall is here!  Some of my favorite things about this season are the changing leaves, cool nights wrapped in a blanket with a cup of hot cocoa, corn mazes and the State Fair.

As a kid, I remember my family going to the state fair specifically for the rodeo and then walking through the animal barns to see the horses that had just performed for us.  For all you country boys and girls, it might not seem like much to be close to such a magnificent animal, but for this city girl it filled me with awe and amazement.  And now as an adult, I get that same feeling when I visit the Tunica Arena & Expo Center.

TunicaMS Trick or Treat Costume Contest

Make Sure You Know How to Play Your Cards with Players Cards in Tunica

As someone who often travels to Tunica to enjoy all the gaming, food and entertainment it has to offer, I know a little bit about how all those things can add up. So, sometimes it is nice to get a little something back for my faithful patronage. Each Tunica casino offers it own Player’s Cards and rewards programs offering loyal gamers tons of free perks. The more you play, the more points you earn. Free stays, free food and more? Where do I sign up? Well I’d be happy to tell you! Check out my list below with details on the perks and rewards for Player’s Card programs at each of the Tunica casinos.

Cornhole: Sport of Champions

The 2011 Smoking Aces Festival & BBQ Championship is taking place this weekend, September 16-17, hosted by Harrah’s Casino. The festival, which we talked about before and which benefits Porter-Leath, is billed as a celebration of some of the most important things in any man’s life: meats, motors, matches, music, malts and margaritas. Taken individually, any of those elements would make for a good weekend, but combine them and you are talking about one heck of a party. The Smoking Aces Festival will be a good time benefitting a good cause, but it’s not a fall weekend without a little healthy competition. We aren’t talking football here, we’re talking cornhole – the “matches” on the list of important m-words showcased by this event.

Airboat Ride of Your Life

For adventure seekers, zooming down the Mighty Mississippi River on an airboat might seem like a no-brainer, but for those of us who prefer our thrill seeking to involve solid ground, riding an airboat might seem a bit daunting.  I, without question, typically prefer dry land, but on this one particular morning I let my friends talk me into taking an airboat tour of the Mississippi River.

Football and Hunting Season is Here!

August – the dog days of summer, it’s hot, dry, humid – hotter, dryer and just down right sticky here in the Mississippi Delta.  To top it off, summer is over and if you have children, it’s back to school time.  But August brings promise, the promise of the first weekend in September. Yes, on the first weekend of September each year, it’s the time most wives love to hate – SEC Football and the opening day of dove season.  And, that’s just the start, leading strait into a full season of the NFL complete with days of your significant other out communing with nature as it can only be found on a deer stand or in a duck blind!

Hell Yeah! Smokin Aces Returns to Harrah’s Tunica

Take Me Away… to the Bellissimo Spa

The Bellissimo Spa at Harrah’s Casino Tunica is the perfect way to unwind from the stresses of everyday life. Once you walk through the spa doors, you will soon forget the kids crying, husband complaining and your boss yelling at you to have your reports done.
Chrissy and I decided that we needed a break and booked a day at the spa. We both scheduled appointments for a Pure Fiji Body Experience and a Hot Stone Massage.

Last Chance Summer Trips

We all remember the days when summer vacation always seemed to end too soon. Like most kids, we dreaded the return of school, teachers and homework. Nowadays, even some adults dread the end of summer. The end of summer means less sunshine, the looming inevitability of cold weather and the end of daylight savings time, ensuring that we leave work, essentially, in the dark..

Tunica’s Ready to Tickle Your Funny Bone!

Beat Summer Boredom in Tunica

Recently, I was looking for something to do one Saturday afternoon. I was bored out of my mind and couldn’t stand lying around the house anymore, so I decided to take a drive to downtown Tunica. Tunica Main Street has always been a nice place to meet up with friends and family for the Alive After 5 concerts, but I never really spend much time there unless I’m headed to Crawfish Alley at the Rivergate Festival or to the Levee Shack inside the Tunica Pharmacy to pick up a gift for my mother. This time I decided to stop by and pick up a map of Tunica Main Street and a visitor’s guide, which you can find by clicking here.

Tunica River Watch – Casinos Begin Reopening

Tunica is open!  We may not be at 100% yet, but then again who is after Ol’ Man River punches you in the gut!  The Mighty Mississippi tried it’s best to keep us down, but didn’t bet on the resilience of a great state like Mississippi.

We are happy to announce that all three casino properties at Casino Center Blvd. will be open for business this week!  Day and times of reopenings are:

Tunica is Still Open!

I am sure you all have seen the news of the rising Mississippi River and it’s affect on Tunica and the Casino Industry. While these have been a difficult couple of weeks, there are a lot of things still happening in the area.

If You Like Memphis, You’ll Love Tunica

While Memphis is home to amazing attractions, restaurants and things to do, we don’t always have it all. You can fill in a few of the gaps with a short drive to Tunica, Miss. Here are five reasons why Memphians should take Highway 61 south across the state line:

1. Casinos may be verboten in Tennessee, but they’re legal in Mississippi. No matter what sort of bets you like to place, there are plenty of options (and good odds) at Tunica’s nine casinos.

Grizz Biz in Tunica

This year, the Grizzlies celebrate 10 seasons of calling Memphis home, and it’s the perfect time to acknowledge those partners who have helped make the last decade such a great one. Just as the Grizz faithful come from all over the MidSouth, our partnerships stretch across the region, and no one has been as valuable – or as fun – as our friends down the road in Tunica.

Mud Bug Fun at Rivergate Festival

Matt Jordan a regular contributor to this blog proclaimed earlier this week that he knows spring is here each year with the start of March Madness.  For me, Spring has not officially Sprung in Tunica until what I affectionately call “Crawfish” week or officially know as the annual Tunica Downtown Event – called the Rivergate Festival.

Spring Has Sprung! March Madness is Here!

Spring is finally here. It’s not because flowers are in bloom or because birds are in the air or because the weather seems to have warmed up a little. The only way I ever even notice Spring has started is because March Madness usually marks the beginning of Springtime for me.

Who Needs Luck When You’re in Tunica

In Tunica, we LOVE the color green!  Especially when the cashier’s handing us our winnings!  And when you’re looking to win, you’ve got to have a lucky charm.

Find Your Pot O’Comps in Tunica

Feeling lucky?  Well then, change your “Irish I was in Tunica” t-shirt and head on over for St. Patrick’s Day at Tunica Roadhouse Casino & Hotel.  Roadhouse welcomes Frankie Hollie & The Noise performing at the stage bar with drink specials including $1 draft green beer, $3 Irish Coffee, $3 Shamrock Shaker, $5 Irish Car Bombs, $3 Guinness & $1.50 domestic bottles.  The green will be abundant (even if it’s just from the free t-shirts & beads!)

And thanks to Tunica Roadhouse’s Leprechaun, we’ve got a pot full of buffet & fine dining comps to give away!! Tell us what your Tunica Lucky Charm is and be entered to win!  ENTER NOW!

Sin City of the Mississippi Delta

Vegas may be called Sin City, but Tunica’s got 7 sins that will make you ask for forgiveness . . . Down The Road!

Greed

So, maybe this sin is a give-in for Tunica.  If you’re coming to play slots, throw craps or hit 21, you’re looking to strike it rich here.  Is that really so bad?  We could all use a little extra green in our pockets!

Hollywood Oasis

With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season now over and cabin fever now setting in, I decided to take a mini vacation away from it all for the night. I couldn’t decide where I wanted to go, but I knew I needed a little rest and relaxation, a little fun and maybe a little special treatment would also be nice. I decided I would venture over to Hollywood Casino. It’s a short drive from Memphis and I had not visited the casino yet, so I figured, why not?

Tunica is going “Wild”

Bragging rights are up for grabs this weekend as Tunica Main Street hosts the 9th annual Wild Game Cook-off. Think of it as the Memphis in May of wild game.

Tunica is Graceland’s Good Luck Charm

By: Elvis Presley Enterprises

Many Tunica fans don’t realize the close connection Elvis had with Las Vegas, but Vegas was the place Elvis got his stage stardom.  We know at Graceland, Tunica is our Vegas! We also know Tunica has “a lot more action” to keep you entertained during your trip, so whether you are visiting Memphis with a day trip to Tunica, or staying in Tunica and coming to see us at Graceland, here are three new things we are looking forward to you seeing in 2011!

Entertainment in the New Year

It’s only a few days into the new year, and I find myself wanting to look forward to a getaway.  It really is the best way to cure the winter blues.  Sometimes that “getaway” is just down the road because the entertainment is coming to me in the new year in Tunica!

3 Doors Down Raises Money for Home State at Horseshoe Tunica

Mississippi Natives 3 Doors Down recently held their seventh annual concert to benefit The Better Life Foundation  at Horseshoe Tunica’s Bluesville raising more than $280,000.  The event was kicked off with a Charity Ride from Jackson, Mississippi, to Tunica Roadhouse  Casino and concluded on Saturday evening with a raffle of the Citizen Soldier III motorcycle valued at over $50,000, a silent auction, and concert.

What to do New Year’s Eve? Come to Tunica!

When planning for New Year’s Eve, the ideal place has 24 hour entertainment, a champagne toast at midnight, drink specials, ways to win prizes or money, great music, and a place to hang your hat, so you don’t have to get on the roads after midnight.  In Tunica, we have it all!

Kickoff in Tunica! Where to Watch the Big Games

It’s football season!  That means every Saturday, Sunday, and Monday there is a big game on TV.  For those of you who will be in Tunica hitting the slots all weekend (or those of you who don’t have the NFL package like me and still want to see the big game on big TVs), Travel Tunica decided you need to know where to catch the game if you aren’t at home.

Pinch Me! Great Entertainment is Coming to Tunica

Barenaked Ladies is an unconventional name for a band, but then again the band has never claimed to be.  With quick speaking lyrics in songs like “One Week” and “Pinch Me”, Barenaked is an original. The band released their first album in the early 90’s, but I bought my first album, Stunt, during my college years and the songs were addictive and just made me want to dance.

Just a few days ago, the Town of Tunica was visited by the “California Gurl” Katy Perry, and her beau, Russell Brand.  Tunica’s not unaccustomed to having big-name stars visit especially when they come to perform, but this mini-vacation for the soon-to-be married couple was a very welcome surprise.

Celebrating Elvis Week Just Down the Road

Elvis is King! That has been the saying for many years and is evident every year on August 15. That is the date for the annual candlelight vigil at Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee.  This year marked the 32nd annual vigil. I have always heard about it, and seeing that Graceland is just down the road from Tunica I decided to see for myself.

25 Miles to Graceland

2010 marks the 75th anniversary of Elvis’ birthday and Travel Tunica thought what better time to experience Graceland.  With Tunica MS being just 30 minutes away, we headed up Hwy. 61 to first have lunch at one of Elvis’ favorites, Arcade Restaurant.

Elvis’ booth at The Arcade.

Founded in 1919, the Arcade is Memphis’ oldest café, and Elvis frequented so often that a booth is dedicated to him. Not only is the food great . . . The Downtowner pizza is a must try, but the atmosphere and design is what moviemakers hope to find in a location.  Click here for the complete story on the Arcade.
Next we headed to Graceland and were amazed at the number of people we saw on a Wednesday afternoon.  There was a steady flow of tour buses driving through the Graceland gates.

Always Entertainment in Tunica

You know the feeling you get when you “discover” a great band?  I love hearing new music!  And finding a local artist that I can tell all my friends about is even better.  A few years ago, I happened upon a band named Gabby Johnson.  Their cover songs were great, but then to hear the Gabby Johnson sound was awesome!  Many people in the Mississippi Delta know exactly what I’m talking about as fans of Gabby Johnson.

If it is the springtime in the South you usually can find an outdoor festival every weekend, if not everyday — Tunica’s Crawfish Boil, Memphis’ Beale Street Music Fest and New Orleans Jazz Fest, just to name a few. BUT, no festival this time of year can compare to Memphis’ World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest.

“Because our visitors have enjoyed the cruises so much in the past, we are making the cruises longer this season, and we will be offering one sightseeing cruise Tuesday through Friday,” Lynn Barton, one of the owners of the Tunica Queen, said.  “There will be two sightseeing cruises also offered at 11:30 and 2:00 on Saturday and 1:00 on Sunday.  Dinner and entertainment cruises will be offered Friday and Saturday at 6:30, for visitors to be able to view the sunset over the Mississippi River.”

Past Music Hits Resurface in my Mind – and in Tunica

For many, when I say the words “Village People” it conjures up images of a policeman, an Indian chief or maybe even a construction worker. However, while that band makes me want to use my arms to spell out “YMCA,” they also remind me of other successful bands and singers in that era — some of which are returning to the stage in Tunica over the next few months. Keep reading to find out what three songs spent the “Village People” decade on top of the charts.

Tunica’s Entertainment is MORE Than It’s Cracked Up to Be!

Craig F. comedianIf you’re a night owl, like I am, you have probably spent time with the remote trying to find the perfect late night humorist to end your night with.  I’ve watched all the late night guys and Craig Ferguson is by far my favorite!  So to get the opportunity to watch him live in Tunica was a must.
