Recently, I was looking for something to do one Saturday afternoon. I was bored out of my mind and couldn’t stand lying around the house anymore, so I decided to take a drive to downtown Tunica. Tunica Main Street has always been a nice place to meet up with friends and family for the Alive After 5 concerts, but I never really spend much time there unless I’m headed to Crawfish Alley at the Rivergate Festival or to the Levee Shack inside the Tunica Pharmacy to pick up a gift for my mother. This time I decided to stop by and pick up a map of Tunica Main Street and a visitor’s guide, which you can find by clicking here.
What can I say? I felt like being a tourist for the day! I figured I would brush up on my American history by trying the walking tour. If you haven’t taken 
Tunica’s self-guided walking tour, you definitely should! With stops along the Main Street area, the tour offers the opportunity to view buildings that date back to the early 1900’s. Each building has a plaque filled with stories of adventure, deception and revenge, a history that most wouldn’t expect in such a quiet Mississippi town. They will also be adding 6 new plaques to various other buildings, growing the tour to over a dozen historic stops. In the end, I was glad I did it, and I will definitely be showing off my newfound knowledge whenever I bring visitors to town.
As in my afore mentioned case, boredom runs high during summer months because of the heat and the lack of holidays to celebrate. Fortunately, for people headed to Tunica, boredom is not an option, especially with all of July’s Independence Day fun. Alive After 5, one of my favorite things to attend when I visit Main Street, will host the next concert in the series, featuring the Memphis Snake Doctors Blues Band, Friday, July 1, from 6-8 p.m. The band will take the stage following the Independence Day Parade, scheduled to begin around 5:30 p.m. in Rivergate Park. Miss Tootie’s Deli will also be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs in the park.
Speaking of the parade, the Independence Day parade is a great place to take kids. Children of all ages can meet in the Marketplace at 5:00 p.m. to decorate their wagons, bicycles, tricycles, or scooters. All of the decoration materials are provided, the parade lasts from 5:30 p.m. until 6 p.m. and all parade participants will be treated to hotdogs, chips, and cookies following the parade.
This summer, no excuses! Whether it’s live music, festivals, slot machines or a ride on the Tunica Queen riverboat at sunset, there is always something fun to do in Tunica.
