Mississippi Blues Trail: Experience The Blues Where They Were Born

Mississippi Blues Trail: Experience The Blues Where They Were Born

The Mississippi Blues Trail is your unforgettable journey into the land that produced arguably the single most important inspiration of modern popular music. Whether a die-hard blues fan or a casual traveler in search of an authentic experience, follow the trail and you’ll visit places you’ve never been and learn facts that you didn’t know about the area that is the birth place of the Blues.

The Mississippi Blues Trail was created by the Mississippi Blues Commission in 2006 to place interpretive markers at the most notable historical sites related to the birth, growth and influence of the blues throughout (and in some cases beyond) the state of Mississippi. As of November 2017, there were 200 markers extending from the Gulf Coast north along several highways to Natchez, Vicksburg, Jackson, Leland, Greenwood, Clarksdale, Tunica, Grenada, Oxford, Columbus, Meridian and many other points. The largest concentration of markers is in the Mississippi Delta where it is believed the Blues were born among the dust and cotton fields.

While the Blues trail follows no path, we encourage you to start your journey 20 miles south of Beale Street on historic Highway 61 North at the Gateway to the Blues Visitor Center and Museum in Tunica Resorts, MS.  This museum lives up to its name by truly serving as your gateway to the larger Blues and music product that is found throughout the Mississippi Delta.

The Trail Marker that begins your journey is located right out front of the Gateway to the Blues Visitor Center and Museum commemorating Highway 61 North- also known as the Blues Highway. From here, step inside the museum where you will be pointed in the right direction to see the other six Blues Markers located in the Tunica, MS area:

  • Abbay & Leatherman Plantation
  • Eddie James “Son” House
  • Harold “Hardface” Clanton
  • James Cotton
  • Hollywood Cafe

You can read about each of the Blues Markers, but take our word for it, you don’t want to miss seeing these Blues Markers that represent some of the most notable and influential bluesman from Robert Johnson to Son House. Make plans to visit us today and begin your journey through one of the most historical and influential destinations located right here in Mississippi.
