Remembering and Honoring Veterans on Memorial Day

Remembering and Honoring Veterans on Memorial Day

In honor of Veterans of all Branches of the Military: those who made the supreme sacrifice, those honorably discharged and those who continue to serve their country, this unique Sculpture captures a poignant scene from the Vietnam War depicting the sacrifice, compassion and courage displayed by those who went in harm’s way.

On November 11, 2002, the Town of Tunica established the Veterans Memorial Park at the edge of our quiet and quaint downtown. The words above are etched on the plaque that welcomes you to the park and is surrounded by beautiful landscaping and benches for sitting to take it all in. This beautiful park features a life-size bronze statue with flags flying high representing each branch of the armed forces as well as a flag for the POW’s.

Under each flag stands a separate plaque commemorating each war for which the United States deployed armed forces along with details of the number that served. In the middle, a plaque in memory of those dedicated public servants and innocent civilians who lost their lives in the tragedy that occurred on September 11, 2001- we will never forget written on the bottom.

While visiting the Tunica Veterans Memorial Park, you are reminded of the important fact that Memorial Day is more than just a three day weekend. It is a day of remembrance to honor those who have died in our nation’s service. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.

Every year on the last Monday of May, the Town of Tunica joins together at the Veterans Memorial Park to take time to remember those that have fought and sacrificed to continue to make our country the “Land of the Free”.  We invite everyone to join us this year as we honor our Veterans.
