Back-to-Back Royals in Video Poker

 Back-to-Back Royals in Video Poker

Some of my favorite tales from readers are those of back-to-back jackpots – or at least jackpots within a few plays of each other.  They don’t happen very often. A 1 in 40,000 chance of drawing a royal flush in video poker translates to a 1 in 160 million chance of back-to-back royals. But given enough trials, anything that can happen eventually will, and there are plenty of trials in casinos.

One of the latest close encounters of the winning kind that has been relayed to me didn’t involve back-to-back jackpots, but two royals within 10 minutes of each other – still awfully good in my book.

The player was Sarah, who once was reluctant to play video poker.

“I wouldn’t play for the longest time,” she said, explaining that her son changed her mind. “I thought the payoffs were boring. Why would I play for a $1,000 jackpot when I could at least dream of far more on the slots? He kept telling me, ‘But Ma, you win more often at poker.’

The big hits came on a family outing with her husband, son and daughter-in-law.

“I went to Deuces Wild,” she said. “I always figure four deuces makes for a nice day. The deuces weren’t coming, and I had to put a second $20 in. A couple of hands later I was dealt the Ace, Queen, Jack and 10 of hearts. I figured maybe I’d draw a 2 and the wild royal would keep me going. Instead, I drew the King! I don’t think I’d ever gotten the natural royal on Deuces before.”

Her luck took a decided upswing.

“It was like that gave me a kick start,” Sarah said. “I got some four of a kinds with deuces after that, and about 10 minutes later I was dealt four parts of a royal again, this time missing the 10 of hearts. My husband was on one side of me and my son on the other, and I said, ‘Think I can do it again?’ My husband said, ‘Sure you can,’ and my son said, ‘You got this, Ma!’

And I did! A second royal! My son said, ‘Aren’t you glad I twisted your arm?’ and gave me a big hug. My husband said, ‘Too bad we already ate dinner. You’d be paying.’”
