Growing up in the region, I’ve always been familiar with Tunica and the array of entertainment options the city offers. It wasn’t until recently, however, that I recognized Tunica’s position as one of the area’s premier golf destinations.
Recently, a friend and I took a day trip down to Tunica to try our hands at River Bend Links golf course. When you step out of the clubhouse and overlook all 18 holes, it’s hard to believe that the course sat beneath nearly 17 feet of water during the flood of 2011. According to the staff, only the clubhouse and cart shed were visible, appearing like islands in the middle of a lake. What the course manager and his staff have accomplished in getting the course back up to playing quality is truly remarkable.
River Bend is a true links course, offering plenty of challenges for golfers of all skill levels with its sprawling hills, bunkers and water hazards. This was the first links course I’d played in a number of years, and it didn’t take long to remember how pleasantly different the golf experience can be from that of traditional courses. When distances add up quickly and hazards sneak up on even the best of shots, you learn to think through approaches and realize the full potential of each club in your bag.
The course is conveniently located right next to Sam’s Town Hotel & Casino, Hollywood Casino, and Resorts Casino, offering golf, gaming and dining all within walking distance. So if you’re looking for a great day or weekend of golf in the area, you can do no better than a day on the links at River Bend.
