Let’s Do an RV Tour of Tunica Festivals

Let’s Do an RV Tour of Tunica Festivals

By Joe Laing of El Monte RV

Summer travels can be made all the better by taking an RV and touring the festivals in one area. There are all sorts of delicious local foods, music and activities for those of all ages at Mississippi festivals and you won’t want to miss a thing. Plan a week’s stay or stay and visit different festivals from August through October! Whichever you choose, you are sure to have the time of your life!

Tunica is well-known for its festival fun, and the Tunica Balloon Bash is just one of a number of celebrations in the region. It runs from 9 August through the 11th at Tunica Resorts. The 2nd Annual Tunica Balloon Bash is colorful, fascinating and provides chances to see balloon races that can’t be beat. Park your RV at Sam’s Town RV Park where you will have full hookups, a lovely landscape and shuttle buses to the casinos if you are so inclined.

From August 29 to September 4 you can visit the Mississippi Jazz & Heritage Festival in Greenville and Greenwood, Mississippi. Here is jazz music that will inspire and enliven! Check out their calendar of events to find where to go on what days. The Mississippi Delta has never seen such a wide variety of music and heritage! When in Greenville, you can stay at the Chicot County RV Park. You have access to the lake here for some summer fun on the water.

One of the most unusual festivals is in Holly Springs from 6 to 8 September. This is the Hummingbird Migration Celebration & Nature Festival with live animal shows, local artists and plenty of food and drink. If you are lucky, you may personally get to release a hummingbird into the wild. Don’t miss the nature sanctuary. Head over to Wall Doxey State Park where you will find a lovely spot to camp in your RV. They have paved sites with hookups and Spring Lake with its boating dock makes your stay something special!

The Smokin’ Aces BBQ Festival takes place back in Tunica on 20 September through the 22nd. Kids love this festival, but so do the grownups. There are games, pig races and carnival rides. Oldies but goodies fill the air when Grassroots starts to play. Chow down at the BBQ competition! Then on the 27th of September the Delta River Cruisin’ Car Show begins and it runs through the 29th. Tunica expects a wealth of classic cars to cruise the streets with lots of friendly faces showing up to join in the fun.

Hang out in the Mississippi Delta until October to experience the Delta Country Jam. Beginning on the 4th and running through the 5th, this celebration of country music is a most anticipated event. You will recognize many of the performers, including Tim McGraw, Josh Thompson and Jerrod Niemann. There will be a Battle of the Bands that is something you simply can’t pass up!

Bridging the Blues is a long list of music and arts festivals that span the time from 27 September to 13 October. You may have to travel around to visit some of these, but you can check out the list and make up your itinerary. For instance, on the 1st of October, you can head down Highway 8 between Ruleville and Cleveland, Mississippi to attend the Tours and Blues Jam at Dockery Plantation and hear Cadillac John and Bill Abel rock out with the blues. In Cleveland on the 2nd of October you can hear Live Blues at Airport Grocery from 8 pm until midnight. Then on the 3rd, head back out for more Tours and Blues Jam at Dockery Plantation from 1 pm until 4 pm. Then of course, head back to Tunica for the Delta Country Jam. Music just never stops in Mississippi!

You can get in another week of music festivals from October 6 to 13! In Greenville it is the Mighty Mississippi Music Festival on the 6th. Check out the Blues #TweetUp! on the 9th in Tunica at the Gateway to the Blues Visitor Center. Then make your way to Clarksdale on the 12 and 13th of October for a whole wealth of rock and blues music, like the Second Street Blues Party and the Cat Head Mini Blues Festival III.

Wow, what a festive vacation this has been! If it was an RV vacation you will have discovered how this made it ultra-convenient and less expensive than a traditional vacation. You’ll have to do this more often!
