hotels, shopping, tourism, travel, tunica
Although I have been living here in the Mississippi Delta for several years now, I am still amazed with how much there is to see and experience here. I recently had the opportunity to spend a weekend in Greenwood, MS and let me tell you, if you want a romantic weekend or a girls getaway, this is the place (besides Tunica, or course).
When visiting Greenwood, there are two things you must do –
Stay at the Alluvian Hotel and take a class at the Viking Cooking School. The Alluvian is an AAA 4-Diamond award hotel and has been voted as one of the top 100 hotels in the US in the Conde Nast Readers Choice poll. Once there, make sure you aren’t to busy to spend a lot of time in your room. I promise once you lay down on one of their beds, you won’t be getting up anytime soon. Once I checked in and took a long nap, I went down to Giardina’s restaurant located inside the hotel for a quick drink before heading across the street to the Viking Cooking School.
The Viking Cooking School offers classes you don’t want to skip. You can choose a hands on class like the one I took or a demo class where you can sit back, relax and watch someone else do the cooking. Either way, you get to drink wine and eat great food and that’s a win win in my book. The class I chose was the “Date Night” and our menu for the evening included chateaubriand, grilled cheese made with brie and a chocolate crème brulee. I left with a full stomach and some awesome new recipes and cooking techniques and headed back to my comfy bed at the Alluvian.
The next morning I literally had to peel myself out of bed to make it to the complimentary breakfast at the hotel. This was not your typical hotel breakfast. This was a full on Southern style breakfast with everything from biscuits and gravy, eggs, grits, bacon and sausage and much more. After we finished eating, we decided to walk off some of our food and visit a few of the shops and boutiques located around the hotel before heading back to Tunica . A couple of my favorite shops were the Mississippi Gift Company and TurnRow Books. We even toured a part of town that was recently used during the filming of the movie “The Help”, look for it in theaters this Summer.
I can’t wait to get back to Greenwood and experience more of the Mississippi Delta!
